Port Jervis – Port Jervis girls' basketball standout Tonjee Ward will sign a national letter of intent today to attend Division I St. Francis (Pa.).
Ward, a 1998 Record first-team all-star, said she will receive a full athletic scholarship worth $21,500 per year.
"Playing Division I basketball has always been a dream of mine,'' said Ward, who led the Orange County League in scoring (22.9 ppg) as a junior last year. "I wanted to go ahead and get it over with. I didn't want to deal with any pressure during the season."
About 10 Division I schools contacted Ward, who transferred from Delaware Valley (Pa.) last season. Ward, a 5-foot-8 small forward who expects to play guard in college, chose St. Francis, which competes in the Northeast Conference, because of its small campus in western Pennsylvania.
Ward overwhelmed Section 9 opponents last season using her quickness off the dribble to break down the opposition. That helped the Red Raiders finish 16-6 and win the OCL American Conference Division II Conference last season. Port Jervis went 5-14 in 1997-98.
"I said last year, Tonjee is the missing piece," Port Jervis coach Luann McCarthy said. "She took us to another level."
